Occupational Therapy Paves the Way

An Important Step on the Road to Recovery at Westminster Village Health & Rehab

When Union Hospital’s retired HR Manager Mary Halsted needed a total knee replacement, her choice of hospitals was easy. For her road to recovery following surgery, the decision was almost as simple. Even before Halsted was released from Union Hospital, she preregistered for occupational therapy at five-star Medicare-certified Westminster Village Health & Rehab.

“I reside in an independent living apartment at Westminster Village, but even if it wasn’t so convenient I would have selected their Health & Rehab program,” says Halsted. “I was confident I’d get good care because their Road to Recovery program is rated five stars.”

Since April is National Occupational Therapy Month, it’s a good time to take a closer look at what occupational therapy means for patients like Halsted. Similar to better-known physical therapy, occupational therapy incorporates daily activities—or occupations—into the rehab process.

“I have two cats, so before the therapy team would release me, they wanted to make sure I could take care of my pets at home,” Halsted explains. “If you have a cat, you know that litter bags can be huge—from 25 to 40 pounds. My therapist made a home visit to make sure I could manage everything in my day-to-day life—including taking care of the litter box!”

Even if Halsted wasn’t a Westminster Village resident, with an apartment right down the hall, the rehab team would have made a home visit as the final step in the occupational therapy program.

Therapists direct patient use of the full-size therapy kitchen and practice stairs onsite, and private toilets and showers in patient rooms, but a personal home review ensures each patient can return to as normal a life as possible when their road to recovery ends at Westminster Village Health & Rehab.

Her occupational and physical therapy regimen included intensive mobility and strength training once a day during her 10-day inpatient stay, and by all measures, she made a full and fast recovery. With a total knee replacement, Halsted was already walking better within three days, and while her occupational therapist instructed her on optional assistive devices like walkers and canes, she didn’t need them.

Halsted attributes much of her success to the Road to Recovery program. “Westminster Village Health & Rehab was perfect for me. I preferred a private room with an en-suite bath and the flexibility to have plenty of alone-time and meals in my room. The accommodations were fine and the food was good and came regularly. But most important, I got the direction I needed immediately after surgery.”

“Some people may pass on it, but I preferred the structure and discipline the formal therapy program provides,” Halsted explains. “The team made sure I was doing exercises properly and building strength quickly—from the very beginning. In fact, even before I left Union Hospital, I met the Health & Rehab pre-admitting nurse. They were friendly, accommodating, and the attention to detail was excellent. They made the transition and road to recovery easy, painless, and speedy.”

Westminster Village Health & Rehab offers 24/7 transportation with two wheelchair vans equipped to securely and comfortably transport patients to and from area hospitals and doctor appointments. Halsted took advantage of the transportation for her doctor visit, but she didn’t need it again after that. Her surgeon was so pleased with her progress he approved her to drive just eight days after surgery.
