Mayor Duke Bennett will proclaim July 8, 2021, “Westminster Village Day” in the city of Terre Haute. In honor of the occasion, one resident of the Wabash Valley’s not-for-profit Life Plan Community, Jack Newman, will be there—because it was all his idea, and a gift from his son.
When Newman’s grown son wondered what to give the guy who has everything, a local charity fundraiser offering “A Mayor for a Day Experience” proved to be the perfect answer. Dad would have the chance to shadow Mayor Bennett. Even before Newman’s big day of civic duty in July, he demonstrated a passion for politics.
“It was Jack’s request to have the special day named after his home—Westminster Village,” says Executive Director Dan Smith. “We couldn’t be more proud. Our chef will be treating the entire staff of the mayor’s office to homemade cinnamon rolls—and a few representatives of our team will be there—bright and early at 9 a.m.—to support Jack when Mayor Bennett reads the proclamation.”
According to Smith, “It’s hard to predict what else Jack might accomplish as he shadows the mayor and offers ideas. But we couldn’t be more delighted to see him represent Westminster Village and our greater community. He’ll no doubt be a great temporary volunteer to the mayoral staff!”
